A 4-session Pitching Workshop Package can be purchased on the Clinic Registration page of the Plymouth-Wayzata Youth Baseball Association (PWYBA) website.   After purchasing a Workshop Package you will receive an email with instructions and a registration code that will allow you to sign-up for workshops.

Pitching Workshops

Lead instruction for all pitching workshops is provided by former Division I college baseball players.  The workshops are designed for 3rd through 8th grade players.  All participants, no matter their age or ability, are required to attend te Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching workshop at least once.  Some workshops have prerequisites.  See workshop descriptions below for more details.

Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching
Includes instruction on the foundational elements of throwing mechanics and the incorporation of these mechanics into the craft of pitching. Workshop will highlight the primary pitching components of Balance, Direction, and Extension while addressing additional detailed elements including leg kick, hand position(s), stride, landing foot, release point, follow-through, and fielding position. Participants will have an opportunity to pitch and receive feedback from the instructor(s).
Prerequisite: although not required, it is helpful for participants to have had previous instruction/exposure to the basic throwing mechanics taught within the PWYBA.  Players of all ages are encouraged to participate in this important workshop multiple times.
Duration of workshop: 60 minutes
Maximum number of participants per workshop: 8

Pitching From The Stretch
Includes a quick overview of the pitching elements covered in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching workshop. Primary focus of this workshop however will concern “pitching from the stretch”. Elements include the craft of holding runners on base, the introduction of various pickoff moves (including multiple moves to first and second base), use of the slide step, and pitchouts.  Participants will have an opportunity to practice the elements introduced during the session and receive feedback from the instructor(s). This workshop is geared towards upcoming 12U players and older.
Prerequisite: must have already participated in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching or been given specific permission to participate in this workshop by the instructor(s).
Duration of workshop: 60 minutes

Developing A Repertoire of Pitches
Includes a quick overview of the pitching elements covered in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching workshop. Primary focus of this workshop however will concern the introduction, explanation of use, and the development of multiple pitches. Pitches introduced will include the four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, straight changeup, and circle changeup. (Discussion with 14U players and older will include the introduction of the curve and slider). Emphasis will be placed on the necessity and art of changing speeds and keeping the ball down in the strike zone. Participants will have an opportunity to practice the elements introduced during the session and receive feedback from the instructor(s).
Prerequisite: must have already participated in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching or been given specific permission to participate in this workshop by the instructor(s).
Duration of workshop: 60 minutes

Pitch Sequencing
Includes a quick overview of the pitching elements covered in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching workshop. Primary focus of this workshop however will be on developing a basic understanding of pitch sequencing for individual at-bats. Participants will be introduced to the benefits derived from first pitch strikes, getting ahead and staying ahead in the count, what to do when you fall behind in the count, and what to do on an 0-2 pitch.  The workshop will include an emphasis concerning the general importance of pitch location and an overview of basic pitch location strategies. Participants will have an opportunity to practice the elements introduced during the session and receive feedback from the instructor(s).
Prerequisite: must have already participated in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching and Developing a Repertoire of Pitches, or been given specific permission to participate in this workshop by the instructor(s).
Duration of workshop: 60 minutes

Advanced Pitch Sequencing
Includes a quick overview of the pitching elements covered in Mastering the Mechanics of Pitching workshop and a review of the elements introduced in the Pitch Sequencing 101 workshop. Primary focus of this workshop however will be on extending the concepts introduced in Pitch Sequencing. Specific topics will include how to vary your sequences from batter to batter, when to pitch inside, using a setup pitch, “climbing the ladder”, “hitting the bull”, and pitch sequencing with runners on base. Participants will have an opportunity to practice the elements introduced during the session and receive feedback from the instructor(s).
Prerequisite: must have already participated in Pitch Sequencing 101 or been given specific permission to participate in this workshop by the instructor(s).
Duration of workshop: 60 minutes

Conditioning for Pitchers
Includes an introduction to proper warm-up techniques for general throwing as well as onfield pitching specific stretching exercises. Workshop will include time for general throwing and long-toss to develop arm strength as well as overall conditioning exercises. Participants will also learn at home techniques for strengthening their arms.  (Note: This workshop is not part of the regular rotation of offerings.  If added to the schedule it will be on an ad hoc basis.  Potential participants will be noticed if/when this workshop gets added.)
Prerequisite: it is assumed each participant has had previous instruction/exposure to the basic throwing mechanics taught within the PWYBA.
